Suspected drug peddler killed in M’singh ‘gunfight’

A suspected drug peddler was killed in a ‘gunfight’ with police at Hobirbari of Bhaluka upazila in Mymensingh early Saturday.

The deceased was identified as Rubel, 31, son of Mujibur Rahman of village Jamirdia of the upazila.

Shah Kamal Akand, officer-in-charge of Detective Branch of police, said that tipped-off that a group of drug peddlers gathered in the area, a team of police raided the area at about 2:30am.

Sensing presence of the law enforcers, drug peddlers opened fire on them while fleeing the spot, forcing them to fire back in self-defense, the OC added.

Police rescued Rubel with bullet-injuries from the spot and took him to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital where doctors declared him dead.

The police also recovered 200 Yaba tablets and 100 gram heroin from the spot.

The deceased was wanted in seven cases, the OC said.
